Finding Deer Antler Sheds

When Do Deer Shed Their Antlers?

Although walking the wooded areas during any time of year can yield deer antler sheds, late winter and the spring time are the best times to be out shed hunting. As the snow begins to melt and the grass is short, this is go-time for finding the best deer antler sheds. Depending on the area where you live, this prime time is usually around 45-75 days long.

Depending on where you live and how much time you spend scouting bucks will really determine your success. If you’re driving past an area throughout the winter that you know is holding bucks, this will be your best starting point for finding deer antler sheds. There are 2 key points to keep in mind to help locate these prime areas: deer trails and southern areas out of the north winds. When you locate the trails, they’ll pretty much take you to both the bedding and feeding areas. Locate a winter food source and check the trails leading to and from. I’ve found that the same areas tend to produce sheds every year. Bucks can be creatures of habit, the same as any animal. Look for patterns every year and it will help you find more deer antler sheds.

Another key point is to use the snow to your advantage and look for bigger tracks. Often, the biggest bucks will use trails most deer don’t use, so often it’s the lightly tracked areas holding the biggest deer. Also, look to see if any of these trails have fence lines intersecting them. A lot of deer antler sheds will be found in areas where they have to jump. Also look for trails that have steeper terrain.

With all this in mind, finding deer antler sheds still involves a lot of time and a lot of luck. Take it slow and don’t rush through prime areas. Like a wiley old rooster pheasant, you never know when deer sheds are right next to your foot.

Selling Deer Antler Sheds

A lot about selling deer antler sheds is the same as learning about deer antlers for sale.  How much you’re going to receive for selling deer antler sheds will depend on the deer living in your area.  You’re going to notice a big difference between whitetail deer antler sheds and mule deer antler sheds; especially if they’re early in the year in velvet (obviously are harvested).  But if you’re spotting nice racks, it’s no secret that those prizes will end up in the ground at some near point in time.

Now that you’re prepped, you’ll need to do some research on the best places for selling deer antler sheds.  A lot of auction type sites will have deer antler sheds for sale, including the big one’s like Ebay.  You can find a good selection at any rate, the prices are all over the board.  Often look in local outdoor websites and list them in the classifieds, you’ll be surprised how many people are looking to buy deer antler sheds.
